The Gros family is a Burgundy dynasty dating back to the 18th century. Since then, there had been several divisions, with the Gros descendants dividing up family properties as well as acquiring new ones.
Founded since 1963, today the winery is managed by Bernard Gros (as seen in the above picture), is the son of the well-known Burgundian Jean Gros and brother of Michel Gros, who made wine under the Jean Gros label until it ceased to exist in 1996.
Gros Frere & Soeur wine offerings and bottling can be summarized into the following:
Hautes Côtes de Nuits: 100% Pinot Noir seeing 25% new barrels, 75% 1 to 4 year old barrels. Lighting fined but unfiltered.
Vosne Romanée: 100% Pinot Noir from 10 years old 70% declassified young vines Echezeaux, sees 1/3 new barrels, 2/3 one- and two-year-old barrels. Lightly fined, not filtered.
Clos Vougeot-Musigni: 100% Pinot Noir from the top of Clos Vougeot bordering Musigny. It sees 2/3 new barrels, 1/3 one-year barrel. Lightly fined, not filtered.
Grands Echezeaux: Produced in minute quantities, 100% Pinot Noir seeing 2/3 new barrels, 1/3 one year barrels. Lightly fined, not filtered.
Richebourg: 100% Pinot Noir and some regard as the estate’s best offering. It sees 2/3 new barrels, 1/3 one year barrels. Lightly fined, not filtered.
The wines of Gros Frere & Soeur when young have a youthful exuberance and slightly greater flavor and texture profile. The wines have deep, dark colors and wonderfully expressive aromatics. The fruit flavors are very pure and concentrated, and the wines are consummately supple, smooth and seamless. While we are prone to oak influence in many young Burgundies, Gros Frere & Soreur wines integrate the oak very well and does not obtrude. Its wines are priced within reach to the average wine consumer and remains a consideration to the wine community at large.

2005 Domaine Gros Frere & Soeur Vosne-Romanée
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
05042008. 13.0%. 100% Pinot Noir. Decanted for an hour. This is stunning dark young Burgundy with bright fresh juicy black cherry flavors, plum and spice. Very open already which is typical of Gros Frere et Soeur wines. A pleasing medium-bodied stuffed wine with density and depth, acidity, minerals, black cherries and tannins with a touch of oak. Lovely finish. It is an impressive wine for a village, which exceeded initial expectation. Drink between 2010 and 2020.
