Sonnenuhr
The German word Sonnenuhr means “sundial“, and for any wine lover it’s a good word to know. Several of Germany’s top vineyards are called Sonnenuhr vineyards, and since German wines usually name the vineyard site, you’ll see this word on the label.
For example, the villages of Zelting, Bernkastel, and Urzig all have Sonnenuhr vineyards. The reason is historic. During the early Middle Ages, monks carefully positioned a sundial on the hill above a village so that it would catch every beam of available light. The purpose was to determine the exact area on the hill where, each year, the snow melted first. Over time, the area around the sundial became known as the sundial vineyard, and the grapes from this vineyard, of course, also benefited from their sunny position. Thus, even today, wines from a Sonnenuhr vineyard tend to be riper and richer than wines from vineyards nearby.
