This 100 acres estate is found in the region of Chianti Classico. Since the 1950s, Paolo de Marchi, and wife Marta have run the estate, with assistance from Piero Masi (vineyard manager).

The estate makes several wines: the usual Chianti Classico which sees 80% Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and (if the year requires it) up to 5% Syrah. Collezione de Marchi, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, a L’Eremo, a 100% Syrah make, and a barrel fermented Chardonnay Collezione De Marchi. Amongst all these makings, the “Cepparello” is the jewel in the crown of this estate which is widely exported to the American and overseas markets. Finally, there is Vin Santo, Tuscany’s traditional wine of welcoming and conviviality, which is made from white grapes (Malvasia and Trebbiano) that are picked early in the harvest, allowed to wither into raisins, pressed in January, and then barrel-fermented and aged for 4 years before bottling. Paolo’s yields are ridiculously small, and his Vinsanto is considered one of the top Italian dessert wines.

2001 Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana IGT
Italy, Tuscany

F16052008. 13.5%. 100% Sangiovese. Tasted over 2 hours with bottle decanting. Stewed plum and ripe raspberry laced with licorice and heat. Full-bodied, spicy and ripe, it has a viscous palate rich in red fruit and mineral, with crushed berries. It has also fairly intense heat and alcoholic fumes. This is an interesting Tuscan style although I am not overly impressed with the quality.
