The Fertonani owned Poggio San Polo since 1998. In June 2007, Marilisa Allegrini, of the Allegrini estate in Veneto, and Leonardo Lo Cascio, head of U.S. wine importer and distributor Winebow, purchased the estate for some US$13.5 Million.
Today the estate is managed by Mauro Fertonani, Luca Dattoma, assisted by Carlo Ferrini (who is also consulting Casanova di Neri) who oversees some 4.6 hectares with a total production of 5,800 cases, of which 2,500 are Brunello, and the rest divided between Rosso di Montalcino and two super Tuscans, Mezzopane (a blend of Merlot and Sangiovese) and Rubio (100% Sangiovese).
The estate product offering and bottling can be summarized into the following:
Poggio San Polo Bunello di Montalcino (Red): 100% Sangiovese from 11 year old vines facing South and southeast. The wine then spends 18 to 20 days fermentation at near 28/30°C. 24 months in French barriques before bottling and release. 1,750 cases made annually.
Poggio San Polo Rosso di Montalcino (Red): 100% Sangiovese from 10 year old vines with the wine spending some 12 months in medium toast French barriques, 1 month in bottle before release. 833 cases made.
Poggio San Polo Mezzopane Toscana IGT (Red): A blend Sangiovese and Merlot, with 18 months in French barriques before bottling and release.
Poggio San Polo Rubio Vino Rosso Toscano (Red): Meant as an easy drinking wine, a 100% Sangiovese with 10 to 12 months in barrels before bottling and release. 6,000 cases made.
The wines of Poggio San Polo is not common in Asian wine retail, but is priced within reach of the average wine consumer.
