Dating back to the late 18th century, this estate takes after the name of its founder, Cesare Pio. Today it remains family owned with Pio Boffa, the great grandson of the founder, at the helm. 4th generation, Pio Boffa was born in Alba (Cueno) on 13th December 1954. He took alongside his father in 1974 at 20 years old till his father passed away in 2000. Pio Boffa has also been responsible for some in the Cantine. The ethos is one of minimal intervention, with maceration, oak contact and other variables carefully tailored to the individual wine.
Pio Boffa owns some 45 hectares within the Barolo region, the “Ornato” Estate and the “Colombaro” Vineyard ( in Serralunga d’Alba), the “Gustava” Estate ( in Grinzane Cavour), the “Roncaglie” (in La Morra) and “Ravera” (Barolo- Novello). Within the Barbaresco territory, the “Il Bricco” Estate and the “San Stefanetto” Vineyard in Treiso Other selected vineyards are located in the communes of Diano d’Alba, Sinio and Trezzo. In addition to is own vineyards, Pio Cesare has fostered long-term relationships with growers for several generations and manages all aspects of viticulture in these vineyards.
Pio Boffa product offering and bottling consist of Barolo, Barolo Ornato, Barbaresco, Barbaresco Il Bricco, Chardonnay Piodilei, Barbera d’Alba Fides, Cortese di Gavi, Chardonnay L’Altro, Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba, Nebbiolo d’Alba, Langhe Arneis, Moscato d’Asti, and Grignolino.
The estate sees some 35,000 cases produced, with 15,000 going to Barolo alone. The two Pio Cesare Barolo cuvées are the most significant; a single vineyard and expensive wine, Barolo Ornato, from a family-owned site near Serralunga d’Alba. First produced in 1985, this cuvee is only released when they have the best harvesting year. This site is also a source of fruit for the straight Barolo cuvée, together with Castigion Falletto and Monforte. Fermentation is at 25-26ºC, with maceration up to 26 days, and aging in Slovenian oak before bottling and release.
The production of the wines of Pio Cesare is intentionally limited in order maintain quality and circulation. They are priced at a premium and may not be within reach to the average wine consumer. Its top cuvees is well known, respected and sought after by the finest Italian wine lovers and collectors.

1990 Pio Cesare Barolo Ornato

1990 was a superb decade for Italian wine with a small crop of outstanding wines being produced. In Piedmont the summer was hot and dry with occasional rain falling just at the right time to give the vines welcome relief. The harvest began 2 weeks earlier than normal and took place in ideal weather conditions. The wines were ripe, firm and well-structured in youth and have developed marvellously well with the finest Barolos and Barbarescos will continue improving for many more years to come.
F16052008. 13.5%. 100% Nebbiolo (内比奥罗). Sampled with dinner. Initially youthful with rich caramel oak domination. It went on to open well with bright red cherry and floral scent. It went on later to invoke further complexity with tea flavors, and mushroom. Medium-bodied with moderate acidity, it is elegant and backed by a cherry first, then earth. This is a fluid, complete and harmonious wine which I feel it may not improve much more than its current state of evolution. A short dry finishing. Enjoyable now. Drink from 2008 to 2011. ![]()
