The history of the Valdicava estate goes back 1953 when Vincenzo’s grandfather, Bramante Abruzzese, acquired 10 hectares of gently sloping land in the middle of the valley for which the estate was named, Valdicava. It is situated on a high plain lying to the north in the coolest part of Montalcino.

Bramante planted the first brunello vines and initialy sold the fruit to Clemente Santini at the Biondi Santini estate. With the help of the Santini family Brumante organized a group of 19 growers to form a “consorzio” or co-op to produce brunello on their own. He built a winery on the estate and bottled wine under the consorzio label. From the roots of his small co-op Brumante officially founded the modern Consorzio di Brunello in 1967.

Brumante later went on to concentrate on Valdicava in 1968 and bottled his first label in 1977. Despite the winery being sold in 1987 to raise more funds. At 13 hectares, the winery today is managed and overseen by Vincenzo, an engineer by education but a genius dedicated to his vines and wines. Assisted by Abruzzese, the estate divides their 5,000 case production between three wines:

Rosso di Montalcino (Red)

Valdicava’s Brunellos are well priced and remains within reach to the average wine consumer while offering a rare opportunity for the fine wine collector.

1997 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano
Italy, Tuscany

F16052008. 13.5%. 100% Sangiovese (桑娇维塞) from a single vineyard planted in 1994. Fresh ripe black berries, very ripe prune jam and mocha. Medium-bodied, with serious pleasure, it is tasty with overripe black cherry and mocha flavors. Moderate depth with good density. Soft tannins, and a smooth texture for an enjoyable and good medium finish. Drink from 2008 to 2018.
