This casual and fun-led tasting event saw some hearty participation with majority falling to the reds, both from the 2004 and 2005 vintage camp.

Despite some surprises, with 2004 being overshadowed by the unusual ripeness of abundant deep, dark red fruit character coming from the 2005. In general, 2004 was a vintage with good floral scent, balanced but lack depth and the runway. While we opened our 2005 wines a rather impatiently, the wines rewarded fruit driven palates while masking the other characteristics such as spice, earth and floral components which is the mainstay of examples of Burgundian wine.

In my personal opinion, the wines from Jacques-Frederic Mugnier excelled with its aromatic properties, with Comte Georges de Vogue not far behind, but these two crown jewels amongst Burgundian collectors may not appeal to the average wine lover. It takes years and expense before you leap to the forefront of the top ethnos of Burgundy. With some exception of course.

For affordability and drinkability, the Montille Bourgogne and Freeman worked wonders the moment they were poured. Both had balance and were round enough to be drunk by almost the entire participating audience.

So what would be your best impression of this session? I would feel the aromatic personality stood out with Mugnier being the longest lived on this front but shortchanged on the palate. As most had medium finishes, the best palate will go to the Freeman and best served blind, especially in a Sommelier glass!

A superb pedigree nose of sensuous and perfumed fruit essence - red ripe raspberry with floral. Medium-bodied. While beautifully textured, the palate is disappointing lacking in breadth and acidity. Short medium finish. Drink from 2008 to 2012.

14.2%. 100% Pinot Noir. Medium-bodied, with good cherry and strawberry structure which initially suggest aged Burgundian styled wine. Deep red fruit and violet with a medium finish. This was a beautifully crafted fresh wine worthy of your attention if priced attractively. Drink between 2008 and 2011.

Medium-bodied with strawberry and red fruit, it somewhat lacks intensity and structure on the palate with drying tannins and a short aftertaste. Compared to the 2004 Joseph Douhrin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru tasted earlier within the year, the latter was showing better. Drink from 2008 to 2009.
