Founded in 1760, Romain (above) and Virgenie Taupenot manages this 12.94 hectares organic Burgundy wine estate. Today, the estate’s vineyard holding and offering include Auxey-Duresses, Saint-Romain, Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos des Lambrays, Charmes Chambertin, Morey St. Denis and Chambolle Musigny. The vineyard is tell tended, with manual harvest and sorting with no chemical or artificial sugar added. 18 months in oak casks. As Romain was telling me, he aims to present his wines as “elegant, with wines in respect of terroir”. Some 583 cases is made with 80% to 90% exported to Europe, while 25% is to Asia including Japan.

The starter, 2006 Domaine Taupenot-Merme St. Romain Blanc (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune). 13.0%. 100% Chardonnay (12 months in French oak) is straightforward with light honey, butter and honest flavor of citrus fruit and light floral hints. Medium on the palate, it felt light with light minerality and spice flavors, built for drinking beautifully upon its release.

Balanced and medium-textured, with finishing touches of savory and gamey notes. A delicious wine, and ideal for early enjoyment. Best from 2009 to 2016.

Full-bodied and firm, with fleshy tannin, and a core fruit character, which is the main dominator leading to a steep finish. From 2014 to 2021.

Third, was the 2006 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Bel-Air (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits). 13.5%, 100% Pinot Noir (A 1er that sits directly above Chambertin-Clos de Bèze made from vines planted in 1973) was a wine with a superb aroma profile than on the palate. Luscious and big red cherry, earth and minerality. Medium-bodied, with gentle yet layered cherry and raspberry pie. Round and fresh, and displaying modernity traits, with the familiar terrain characteristics of freshness, deep raspberry, spice and sweetness finishing with medium intensity. From 2012 to 2026.

A well structured Burgundian, the 2006 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits). 13.5% 100% Pinot Noir is a deep wine and exhibits well, with floral, moving through red plums to cherry. Medium-bodied, with admirable structure and plenty of fresh red fruit structure, it is mineral rich with good rounded fruit to topple off with a delightful finish. Best from 2014 to 2021.

An exotic 2006 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d’Orveau (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits). 13.5% 100% Pinot Noir from 35+ year old vines, possesses great charm and richness of fruit. Floral, raspberry, licorice, and red cherry, this medium-bodied classy Chambolle does not disappoint with light mossy notes, balance with fruit roundness and a drier finishing style as compared to the other wines. Best from 2010 to 2015.

Coming to the Grand Crus category, the 2006 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Corton-Le Rognet, (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits). 13.5% 100% Pinot Noir sees only 5 barrels made from this 0.5 hectares parcel, sited well serving an initial impression of intense and distinct fleshiness, ripeness, strawberry and dew berry flavors, which peels off to reveal more sweet and sour berry offering. Still evolving, and finding its balance. Vibrant and full-bodied, round and yet restrained from unleashing its potential, with dry spice and brambles, red fruit scent and energetic wood tannin and acidity which carries its way through to a medium, yet lingering finish. It would need time to further soften, and should emerge richly and exotically. Best from 2010 to 2020.

One of the stellar Burgundian tasted at Sopexa’s 2008 Epicurean Burgundy, the 2006 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Mazoyères-Chambertin, (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits). 13.5% 100% Pinot Noir from a 0.85 hectares parcel. Floral intense with licorice, dark raspberry and red cherry, which translates to more red fruit, leather, finesse which suggests a well made wine. Quite robust with structured tannin and a wonderful pedigree texture, the wine ends its marvelous insight with a serious and impressive medium long finish of tremendous pedigree. Best from 2014 to 2024.
